Booking a rooftop in New York

Rooftops are the most requested and most weather-dependent category we list. What you are buying is a view and open air, and in New York that combination has a short season — roughly May through September, with May and September carrying real risk at either end. Everything else about the booking follows from those two facts.

Our rooftop inventory sits in Dumbo, Chelsea, NoMad, Koreatown, Tribeca and Lenox Hill. Dumbo carries the bridge-and-skyline view and the highest rates on the site; NoMad and Koreatown offer genuine skyline outlooks at a fraction of it, because they sit in the gap between low-rise blocks and the Midtown towers rather than on the water.

Three questions decide whether a rooftop booking works. What is the wet-weather plan — an indoor room included in the rate, a covered section, or nothing? What is the noise curfew, since almost every roof in a residential building has one and it is usually earlier than you want? And what is the actual capacity in the open-air portion, as opposed to the combined indoor-outdoor number in the listing? Get all three in writing before you pay a deposit.
