Booking a studio in New York

Studios are the most specialised spaces in the catalog and the ones where the fixtures matter more than the square footage. A daylight studio is chosen for its north light and window height. A cyclorama space is chosen for a seamless coved wall that photographs with no visible corner. A dance or movement studio is chosen for sprung floors and mirrors. A recording or music studio is chosen for acoustic isolation. None of these substitutes for any of the others.

The concentration is in the Flatiron District and the Garment District in Manhattan and around Greenpoint in Brooklyn — the Flatiron cycloramas and daylight studios in particular barely appear anywhere else in our inventory. Rates vary enormously with what is installed, which is the honest answer to why two rooms of the same size differ by a factor of five.

Ask about the things that do not show in photographs: rigging points and weight limits, blackout capability, power draw and circuit count, whether grip and lighting packages are included or rented, and load-in access for equipment. For a shoot day, those answers matter more than the room.
