Booking a loft in New York
The loft is the archetypal New York event space, and for once the cliché is load-bearing: these are genuinely different rooms from anything purpose-built. Converted from nineteenth- and early twentieth-century manufacturing floors, they come with ceiling heights of twelve to eighteen feet, windows on two or three sides, exposed columns, timber or concrete floors, and almost no fixed furniture. Everything that makes them photograph well is a by-product of what they were built to do.
Our loft inventory concentrates in SoHo, Tribeca, the Flatiron District and along the Brooklyn waterfront, and it splits into a few real sub-types: event lofts set up for hosting, film and photo lofts with rigging and blackout, apartment and live/work lofts with a domestic feel, and industrial lofts that are closer to raw space.
The trade-off is that a loft is a shell, not a service. Sound bounces off hard surfaces, heating and cooling are often uneven, freight access can be the whole ballgame, and you will be bringing in most of what you need. If you have a production team or a full-service caterer, a loft gives you more room and more character per dollar than anything else in the catalog. If you do not, look at event venues first.
